  • Schools Football Tournament

    Wed 20 May 2015
On Friday 15th May, St Michael’s played a schools soccer tournament at the Ulidia playing fields.  Eight teams competed in a tough competition.
We won our first game 10-0 against Holy Rosary. In our second game against Holy Trinity, we came through as 3-2 winners.  In our final game of the group we beat St Peter’s 3-0 and qualified for the semi-finals.
We were drawn to play St Bernard’s in the semi-final.  We took the lead within five minutes thanks to a wonder strike from Jack.  However, in the final few agonizing moments St Bernard’s scored an equalizer.  The game finished 1-1 and needed to be settled by a penalty shootout, St Bernard’s snatched a 3-2 victory and headed off to the final (in which they were victors).
In the third/fourth place playoff St Michael’s faced Holy Trinity. We emerged victorious with a 2-0 win to settle in third place for the tournament.
Well done to all the boys who took part: Tom, Jack, Conor, Emmet, Jarlath, Rory, Finn, Matt, Sean,  Rory & Emmet.

On Friday 15th May St Michael’s went to a football tournament at Ulidia playing fields.  Eleven players went to the tournament, Emmet, Tom, Jack, Rory, Emmet, Jarlath, Matt, Finn, Conor, Sean and Rory.
Our first match was against Holy Rosary ‘B’, we won 11-0.  After St Michael’s went to play Holy Trinity where we won 3-2.  Then we went to play our third and final match in group ‘B’ against St Peters ‘B’, we won 7-0.
After winning all our group ‘B’ games we were through to the semi-finals where we were drawn to play against St Bernard’s. The match was 15 minutes long, and at full time the score was 2-2 and the match went to penalties. Our three penalty takers were Emmet, Emmet and Rory, St Michael’s scored two of their penalties but St Bernard’s scored all three of theirs and progressed through to the final.
We played a match for third place which we won. Thank you for the lovely experience.

  • Walk to school week 18th 22nd May 2015

    Wed 13 May 2015
    Walk to school week – 18th – 22nd May 2015

We want to help children in St Michael’s discover the health, social and environmental benefits of walking to school.

St Michael’s has participated very successfully over the past few years in “walk to school week’.  This year we are aiming to improve the number of children taking part.
As a school we are hoping to start a trend where the children walk to and/or from school on a regular basis.
Our school council would like to begin a WOW (walk once a week or walk on Wednesdays) campaign for the beginning of the next academic year, so walk to school week will help start this initiative.

By walking to school there are fewer cars on the road and less pollution, there will be less congestion, and the children will l become fitter and healthier.

So from Monday we ask that you walk to school with your children, perhaps drive half way and park in Cherryvale and walk the rest of the journey. Children should only walk to school on their own if parents are satisfied they are aware of the dangers and use the Green Cross Code.

There are useful ideas on the ‘Walk to School’ website and Goodling “Tales of the Road” – this is interactive and fun for the children.

Teachers will go over the Green Cross Code and Road Safety with the pupils this week.  For those who wish to cycle/scoot on this week, we have a few safety reminders:
    1. The children should always wear a helmet.
    2. They should wear high visibility vests.
    3. School bags need to be worn correctly so that buckles etc do not get caught up in the mechanisms and nothing should be carried on the handlebars – both hands need to be on the bars.
    4. The children must wheel the bike into the playground.
    5. The bike should be brought home every day.
Parents need to be confident that their child has a full understanding of the safe way to ride their bike to school before allowing them to do so.

Enjoy ‘Walk to School Week’, be careful and have fun.
